The Miraculous Butter Bell!

Tuesday, November 27, 2007

One of my favorite kitchen tools is the butter bell! Where has the butter bell been all my life? I often wonder how I ever lived without it! My sweet husband gave me this great little tool for Christmas last year.

We always use real butter... why we don't use artery clogging preservative filled margarine or artificial 'spreads' is a topic for another post. Also, we buy our butter in bulk from the health food store. This butter comes in a two pound 'blob' which makes it difficult to use in its hard, cold, refrigerated form. Of course, any of you users of real butter understand that cold butter is nothing short of an uncuttable brick! It must be room temperature to be even slightly spreadable... and we like spreadable butter! The solution to our dilemma... the butter bell!! Here is how it works. You fill the bowl of the bell with softened butter. Into the crock you place about 1/3 cup of cold water. Then the bowl of butter is turned upside down so that the water forms an airtight seal keeping the butter fresh and tasty... and spreadable!... for 30 days! It's a miracle product!! Now our family enjoys fresh delicious organic butter with the ease of any other spreadable substitute! It works for us!

We love our butter bell! I don't know how anyone can live without one either. What's the deal with margarine anyway? Do people really eat that stuff?

This is the greatest thing I have ever seen. We too are "butter only" people and I have begun buying it is huge blocks from Costco. You have just made me a very happy girl!!

I've never heard of these before! I'll have to look into it. (Where do you find them?)

Wow, I have never seen one of these! I must have one! We also use only butter. The thought of smearing something that so closly resembles plastic on my toast is not appetizing at all! Great tip!

He actually bought that for me from a catalog but you can find them in any kitchen store or several places online such as:

Hope that helps!

I have one of those, but I stopped using it. I loved it, but it just didn't work for me the way it was supposed to. My butter was growing mold very quickly, and sometimes it would fall out into the water. Maybe I did something wrong?

can't wait to get one!!!

We are a butter only family too. Margarine is SO unhealthy despite what they tried to tell us.

To teach kids about the principal used with these butter bells, have them bunch up a paper towel into a ball and put it into a cup so the towel does not fall out when the cup is turned upside down. Turn the cup over and insert it into a bowl of water. Make sure they insert the cup straight down and not at an angle. Then, have them lift out the cup straight up. They will see that the paper towel is completely dry! The magic of science. And the reason why the butter stays fresh.

I have never heard of a butter bell. It sounds like a fabulous idea and a great present for my daughter-in-law. Where do you get them?

Butter or nothing in our home as well! Does it stay spreadable in the fridge because of the water or do you leave it out? Thanks!

Lady Why said...

It stays spreadable because it's out on the counter. The airtight seal it gets from being submerged in the water is what keeps it fresh! It's the greatest invention since sliced bread!!

And, 4urpets, you can get them at any kitchen shop and many places online!

Happy Spreading!

I don't have a butter bell, but I do know that butter doesn't go bad just being on the counter. We keep it in a plastic tub on the counter, and my mother did the same before me, and I haven't ever seen it spoil.

I heard about it, but now I've seen the system.
It's great!!

I love my Butter Bell. It is great. Marie said she tried it and her butter would get mold on it. You are supposed to change the water out every few days so it stays fresh, and the water should be cold when you first put it in. We only eat butter, too. Even though it may not be perfectly healthy, at least it is natural, and it tastes great.

I often wondered if a butter bell worked! I hate margarine. It's one chemical chain link away from plastic -- can you imagine how your body must feel processing THAT?

We also prefer butter to margarine, but buy it in stick form. I am going to have to check into this butter bell and butter blog:)

Hi all!

I a came across this blog today and thought I might write as I work for L. Tremain, Inc, makers of the Butter Bell Crock. It is wonderful to see all the positive feedback for the Butter Bell. We are in our 11th year of business and have sold almost 2 million units to date. The Butter Bell has been tremendously successful an we continue to expand our line and are launching a new line of butter spices in a couple of months. Dare I attempt a shameless plug and give you the links to our blog and website at http://www.butterbell.blogspot.com and the official Butter Bell website is at www.butterbell.com.

Thanks for all your support and we look forward to continued Butter Bell blogging and spreading the word!
