Frugal Family Christmas Tradition

Friday, December 7, 2007

This year we have started a new Christmas tradition and I'm excited to see it unfold! We have eight family members and, therefore, eight stockings to fill. We don't play Santa Claus so everyone already knew that it is Mom and Dad that fill the stockings. This year we changed things up a bit. We drew names for stockings!

Each family member has someone else's stocking they are in charge of filling. But, wait! That's not all! Each stocking has to have a theme! The theme is chosen by the filler to best express the personality and/or tastes of the 'fillee'. This has been the most fun!! There will be store bought items but for the most part, everyone is making or acquiring from grandmothers' attics or finding from garage sales the items they need. We are having a grand time sneaking around and hiding our treasures from each other. We have helped the little ones a bit but I've been surprised at how great their ideas have been and how resourceful they are! We are going to have a little competition on Christmas morning and vote on things like "Funniest Theme", "Best Overall Theme", "Most Clever Theme" and such. The house is abuzz with excitement!

Stay tuned for theme choices and pictures after Christmas!

Mr. Knightley and I fill our five kiddos' stockings every year (we don't play Santa Claus either), but this idea of yours is FANTASTIC! Thanks for sharing it.

I love this idea! Especially the twist with the theme representing the 'filee'. I'll have to remember this for when the kids are a little older.

What a great idea! I will have to do that next year with our small family of four. A great way to allow their imaginations and generosity take wings. I love that things can be 'recycled' from attics, garage sales, etc.
Thanks for sharing.
