Kiss those tear stained aprons goodbye!

Tuesday, May 27, 2008

Here is a simple, little known, kitchen trick that has saved us a lot of pain and suffering over the years. When chopping an onion, have a candle lit next to your cutting board. The candle will burn away the sulphuric fumes of the onion which is like tear gas to so many of us cooks. The result is a pleasant tear-free onion chopping experience. It definitely works for me!

I literally have tears running down my cheeks when I cut onions. In fact, I have the send the little ones out of the kitchen so I don't step on them! I just can't see! I'll give this a shot. Thanks!

Martha Stewart mentioned this on her show today and I actually tried it, it worked!!! I usually wear my sunglasses when chopping onions and even then I get teary but the candle took care of it. I'm so glad I heard this trick.

This is brilliant! Or at least it sure sounds like it. I'm like the other commentors, always worried I'll trip over kids or chop my fingers off because of how blinded I am by tears. I'm totally going to try this.

My children and fingers thank you in advance. lol.

Great idea. I use onions in practically every main dish I make, so hopefully I'll be spending a lot less time crying now. Who ever cried over spilled milk? I cry over chopped onions!

Thanks for this one!

My mom's TNT way to chop onions was to put a slice of bread in her mouth, but it's never quite worked for me.
